It dawned on me the other day that I’ve been out of college for 20 years. When I looked back at the differences between 1990 and now from a work perspective, it doesn’t take much to see how drastically different my life is now. No more flapping mechanical boards for me! (someone out there HAS to remember those!)
All of my friends and clients know I’m a tech geek. I love it. Some days I think I missed my calling – maybe I should have been a programmer or engineer or something. When someone has a problem with their computer or BlackBerry, they call me. I pretend to moan about it, but I secretly love it. I get huge satisfaction out of “fixing” things or figuring them out.
So, this Thanksgiving, I’m extremely thankful for the following technological advancements that have changed my life during my 20 year career in marketing:
- Email – no explanation needed here!
- The Internet in general because it gives me the ability to conduct research much more easily than I could back at Temple. It also allows me to promote Active Integrated Marketing efficiently and cost-effectively.
- Social Media – I don’t even remember life before Facebook…(is that pathetic???)
- PowerPoint – it’s taken me a while to adjust, but it’s much easier for client deliverables than a Word doc
- Web meetings – like WebEx and GoToMeeting. Nothing takes the place of a face-to-face meeting, but it’s such an efficient way to be able to present when a F2F isn’t possible.
- Marketing Automation – as a marketer in a large company where getting the right info and leads to the sales team is critical AND being able to measure and track EASILY, marketing automation is nirvana. Want to learn more? Check out Neolane, Eloqua and Marketo to name a few.
- My new color NOOK. I’m notorious for reading multiple books at a time (get bored easily), and I can toggle back and forth, see what’s new and even go on the Internet all at the same time. It’s a book-lover’s multi-tasking dream!
- Last but not least, my BlackBerry. The bane of my existence and the love of my life.
I am especially grateful for my friend Andy, who is my go-to guy when I can’t figure out some programming or technology. He’s always patient with me and teaches me so I’ll learn for the next time. Thank you Andy!
And thank you Susan for helping me learn the ins and outs of WordPress, not to mention helping me brainstorm blog topics.
Are you especially thankful for new technology? I’d love to hear what and why!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
